What is bmi/ Body Mass Index:
It is the relation between weight of the person to the the height of the person. It is the measurement of the total body fat. It is not a direct measurement but it is kind of indicator which is used clinically. As the BMI score increases the total body fat also considered as increased.
How is BMI calculated:
For calculation of BMI mathematical formula is used. So formula for BMI is weight of the person in kg divide metre squared.
Mathematically,
BMI =weight (kg)/ metre square
Normal range of BMI :
According to World health organisation (WHO) normal BMI of a person should be between 18.5 to 24.9. Person having BMI 25 to 29.9 is considered as overweight BMI. If BMI is more than 30 ,it is considered as obese and if BMI is below 18.5 then it is considered as underweight.

Uses of BMI :
BMI is used to screen obese and overweight person clinically.It is calculated as some of the diseases are more relevant and associated with obese and overweight people.
Person with high BMI are are likely to have following health risks:
- Heart disease
- High paid and cholesterol disorders
- High blood pressure
- Snoring and sleep apnea
- Certain types of cancers
- Diseases of gallbladder
- Osteoarthritis
- Premature death
- Stroke
However BMI is not accurate measurement for the body fat as it cannot define the composition of body in terms of bone muscle fats. But in most of the cases it can be used as a tool for assessing overweight, underweight an obese.
