Trichomonas:

Trichomonas vaginalis


       These are protozoa having 3 to 5 anterior flagella, exist only in the tropozoite phase. They do not have cystic phase.

Trichomonas vaginalis :

              Trichomoniasis is caused by the agent Trichomonas vaginalis. It is around 13 micro metres. It's habitat is female genital tract. This is also found in the male and female urinary tract.

             Trichomoniasis (“trich”) is one of the common sexually transmitted infection (STI). As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 3.7 million Americans are living with trichomoniasis at any given time. 

Morphology of Trichomonas vaginalis

              T.  vaginalis exist only as tropozoite. It is like pear shaped. Lenth measures 10 to 30 micro metres and breadth is 5 to 20 micro metres. It has round anterior end and have depression at its side. In anterior end single ovoid nucleus is present. They have 4 anterior flagella that are free.

Symptoms of  Trichomoniasis (Trich):


           Trich mostly  has no symptoms. Almost 85 person of the people are not symptomatic.

           Symptoms is not shown quickly as the person go to the condition. It takes how much 5 to 28 days after person got the condition. In some of the cases it may takes longer duration as well.

The most common symptoms of Trichomoniasisamong people with vaginas are:


  • Vaginal discharge, discharge can be coloured like white, gray, yellow, or green, and it is usually frothy and have unpleasant smell.
  • spotting or bleeding of vagina
  •  Itching of genital
  • Vaginal burning
  •  Swelling and redness of vagina
  • Pain during urination or sexual intercourse
  • frequent urge for urinate
  • There may be Bleeding after sex

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in male:

  • Urethral discharge
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation during urination or after ejaculation 
  • Itchingg or irritation inside their penis
  • A thin white discharge from the penis
  • Pain during urination or during sex

Diagnosis of Trichomoniasis:

         It can be diagnosed by doctors, taking a sample of urine or fluid from your genitals and examining it under a microscope to spot the protozoa. 

        There may be need of test called culture . This is when they store the sample for several days so the microbes can grow and become easier to detect under a microscope.

       Sensitive tests called nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) can also detect signs of the parasite.

There may be test for other sexually transmitted disease (STD). Very often it is seen that person with Trichomoniasis also have gonorrhoea and Chlamydia.

Treatment for Trichomoniasis :

       
                 Antibiotic like metronidazole (Flagyl, Noritate,) and tinidazole (Tindamax) cure the infection in most people. Doctor will give you pills to swallow, either in one large dose or in several smaller doses. Complete the course of treatment even though you start feeling well .


       Treatment remove the agent,but there is still chance to get it again. In 20% of cases they got infection again within 3 months.

        Your sexual partner or partners need to be treated as well though they don’t have any symptoms. Stay away from sexual intercourse for 10 to 12 days after treatment. It is recommended to get tested before having sexual intercourse.

How to prevent Trichomoniasis:

              To avoid STDs one must avoid vaginal, anal, or oral sex with infected partner. They must follow some guidelines.

 Sexually active people should follow some preventive measures:

  • Don't make multiple sex partner. Have a long term sexual relationship with one partner that also after being tested negative for all STDs.
  • Use of latex condoms during intercourse in well manner can protect you. This can reduces the chances of getting trichomoniasis.
  • Have talk about the risk of STDs before having sex with a new partner. Both can stay safe by doing this. Also get tested before coming into sexual relationship.
